The most wonderful bike tours through the land of 1000 mountains

The Sauerland – the headquarters of the SKS Group – is a true paradise for cyclists with its mountains, valleys, rivers and lakes. There are a multitude of great routes for anyone wanting to discover the region by bike.

You will find a few of the most wonderful tours in our new blog. Enjoy riding them yourself!

SauerlandRadring bike trail

Riding along old railway lines

Cyclists no longer run out of steam today on the tracks that steam locomotives once puffed along. The route, which mainly runs along old railway lines, connects the towns of Finnentrop, Eslohe, Schmallenberg and Lennestadt over a total of 84 kilometres. Along the route, cyclists can look forward to numerous small museums and lovingly restored buildings that bear testimony to the culture of industry and small craft businesses. Another highlight of the tour is the nearly 700-metre long Kückelheimer Tunnel at Finnentrop-Fehrenbracht. Anyone who still has not had enough after this lap can continue their bike tour on the 40-kilometre long HenneseeSchleife bike trail that connects the SauerlandRadring bike trail in the north with the RuhrtalRadweg bike trail.

Ruhr Valley Cycle Path

Adventure cycling along the Ruhr

The 240 kilometre long Ruhr Valley Cycle Path runs from Winterberg to Duisburg and therefore follows the Ruhr River from its source to where it flows into the Rhine. The bike tour is rated as a 4-star quality cycle route by the German Cycling Association (ADFC) and it connects nature, culture and the urban industrial landscape. If you follow the well-signposted route, you cycle through 23 towns and villages and cross the Ruhr as many as 36 times. The Ruhr Valley Cycle Path can be easily divided into stages so that the towns and cities, museums, places of interest, dams and castles can be explored extensively along the route.

SKS Bike Trail

Steep climbs and flowing trails

A mighty 47 kilometres and about 1300 metres in altitude – the SKS Bike Trail is a real test of strength. But the route also has a lot to offer for pleasure bikers. The start is near the SKS company building. After gentle undulations, the tour starts with some steep climbs. The downhill trail makes up for the altitude gain, ending with a crossing over a forest stream. The highest point of the tour is in the village of Wildewiese with rustic refreshment stops. A short detour to Schomberg Tower is especially worthwhile on a clear day. The route continues on narrow trails with many wonderful viewpoints. In a change from forest paths and single trails, the tour leads back to Sundern.

Möhne Valley Cycle Path

From the source to the mouth of the river

On the Möhne Valley Cycle Path, touring cyclists can experience the Sauerland region away from any climbs. To the south of the Haarstrang hills, the route continuously follows the small river Möhne. It flows for 65 kilometres connecting the old Hanseatic city of Brilon with the mouth of the Ruhr River in Neheim. Meadow landscapes with lush meadows, green forests and gentle hills characterise the setting during the tour. Large parts of the route run on a former railway line without any climbs. One highlight is the Möhnesee (Möhne Reservoir), one of the largest reservoirs in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). The route runs along either the south or the north bank and offers pure nature.
